The Other 15 Days

I would estimate that 350 days out of the year, I almost forget that David is any different than any other 8 year old boy. And the other 15 days? I want to cry. Today was one of the 15. We were doing our summer speech program tonight, and one of his activities was to read a short book using his good speech sounds.  I had a Llama Llama book on my nightstand and grabbed it.  He told me that reading "Llama Llama Red Pajama" makes him feel like he wants to cry because the "boy" is scared at night and that is frightening to him. I asked him what else makes him feel like he wants to cry. He said, "When I go out for recess at school and I ask the kids in my class if I can play with them, and they all tell me no. Then I just sit by myself and wish I had someone to play with."

That makes me want to cry too.

  2. I just bawled my eyes out reading this. Kids can be so mean and I'm sorry your sweet boy has to cope with the pain they can cause. Hugs to him.

  4. Clearly those kids don't know what they're missing. And if it's any consolation, Sweet David, they're probably po-duct hillbillies. After all, it is Bedford County, right? Don't you worry about those jerks. They'll get theirs. And in the meanwhile, you have two amazing brothers and a beautiful new sister who love you...and will probably one day kick their asses for you.

  5. Oh dear that is heartbreaking. What I don't understand is why teachers do not see this and help to resolve it? It is so important. God bless your little man!

  7. Recess is the worst. I used to watch my little one walk around by herself. It broke my heart.

  9. I'm a teacher. PLEASE tell his teacher. Sometimes in the craziness of recess duty etc. things do get overlooked. I'm not trying to make excuses. . . I'm just saying. No little boy or girl should feel that way.
